We will be based in Thurso and take excursions from there, and there will be an opportunity for a reception and evening visit to the collections of the Caithness Horizons Museum with the Curator Joanna Howdle guiding the visit. We have a number of confirmed speakers at this stage on a variety of aspects of life and heritage in Caithness:

• Maya Hoole (HES) on the Bronze Age beaker grave and facial reconstruction work at Achavanich,
• Kenny Brophy (Glasgow University) on the Stone Rows of Caithness
• Andrew Conlon (Glasgow) on AO Curle and his Antiquarian wanderings
• John Borland (RCAHMS/HES) on the Pictish and Early Medieval stones of the region
• Colleen Batey will provide a review of the Norse and Late Norse evidence
• Andrea Blendl (UHI) the runestones in Caithness and the Northern Earldom
• Linda Ross (UHI) on the impact of Dounreay

In addition, other speakers have been approached to present on life on Stroma, the flagstone industry and the millat John O’Groats. Further details will be circulated later

Bus tour: Time Tour Pictish Perthshire [Perthshire] ...

Join Archaeology Scotland on Saturday 14th April for a Time Tour of archaeological and historical sites across Perthshire in the comfort of a luxury coach and travel back to the time of the Picts on this all-day excursion. Sites to be visited:

  • Forteviot royal centre of the kings of Fortriu, birthplace of the Kingdom of Alba—superb monuments
  • Dunning Perthshire, a focus of the cult of St Serf, mon-astery, old church and magnificent Dupplin Cross
  • Perth Museum—St Madoes StoneMeigle Museum 26 wonderful carved stones and the grave of ‘Queen Vanora’ (was she Guinevere?)
  • Eassie ruined church and mysterious cloaked figures on the back of a cross slab

Our on-board guide, Peter Yeoman, will be sharing his knowledge of Pictish Perthshire and Mark Hall from Perth Museum will enthral with his specialist knowledge. A buy your own Lunch stop has been arranged for 1pm at the Joinery Café in Meigle (soup, sandwiches, cake, coffee etc) but please feel free to bring your own snacks for the bus to keep the rumbles at bay. There is an old story that the fairies were to build a bridge to connect Fortrose andNairn, hear this and tales of Rosemarkie's Pictish Past with music and song

The event is for families, keen to foster deeper connections with local heritage , and encourage young people to discover the riches of their museums.
